It does have a sort of a negative connotation, ditionary.com says “More recently, nonplussed has been used to mean “indifferent or unexcited,” a contradictory second meaning.”
Interesting word! What it comes to my mind is “surprised”, “confused”, and not certain how to react. For example: “The inexperienced teenage driver was nonplussed when his car began to slide on the ice.”
The word itself makes sounds as if you are unfeeling or uncaring about something, apathetic. Or at least it does in my mind. LOL.

I KNEW IT! I was pretty sure that the times I’ve read this word it was using with this meaning.
Thank you, Edy!

Besides nonplussed, she was certainly terrified. Great sentence, Andrea!
